Most Makeup Artists have wanted to be in the business since they were little girls. They had their toy makeup kits and dreamt of doing makeup for famous celebrities. Myself, on the other hand, wanted to be a Marine Biologist.
I grew up in Waimanalo, Hawaii. A tiny little town on Oahu right on the beach. My dad was really into surfing so my mom and I spent a lot of time on the beach playing in the sand, swimming & watching him surf. One night my parents took me to watch a local aquarium (Sea Life Park) release baby turtles into the ocean. That’s the night I became fascinated with marine life & decided working in the ocean with these beautiful creatures was my calling. I don’t remember exactly why but I ended up losing interest in being a marine biologist & I started leaning more towards the beauty industry. My whole life at that point was dedicated to one dream.. Now that dream changed. I felt scared and didn’t know what to do.
In highschool I never wore a lot of makeup. I think I was a Senior when I started wearing black eyeliner and Covergirl pressed powder (Only because my friends and cousins were). I found a few beauty Gurus on YouTube ( Kandee Johnson & JLovesMAC1 ) and started experimenting with makeup. I graduated not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. I took a year off of school to decide if being in the beauty industry was what I really wanted to do. I decided on Esthetics. Both of my parents, and quite a few of my Auntys, do hair so I wanted to stay away from Cosmetology.
I attended Honolulu Community College & received my Certificate of Completion in Esthetics. Not to toot my own horn, but I was pretty damn good.
I ended up meeting my now husband & we got stationed in Guam. I worked in a few salons before Guam but never really pushed the makeup services. Then I met Sasha Greve. She was a blessing in disguise. She was starting her photography business (Sasha Greve Photography) and needed a Makeup Artist. I needed a job so that worked out perfect. This is when my interest in makeup really took off. Sasha helped me with ideas, promoting my work, and suggesting me to other photographers on the island. I could not thank her enough for all she’s done for me.
As of today 01/01/2014, I’ve worked in multiple salons, on photoshoots, TV commercials, newspapers and more. I’ve learned & grown so much from all my experiences; how to deal with clients, new techniques, services, etc.
My goal is to make client happy by offering quality services and to one day open my own salon/spa.
